Welcome to Class 1

Class 1 is a Nursery and Reception mixed class. We learn through a play-based curriculum, with adult led phonics, maths and topic sessions each day.

Parents and carers can view regular updates and photos to show the current learning via the Tapestry Learning Journal app. A login to the app will be provided when your child enrols at Whitemoor.

Children need to bring in the following each day:
  • Coat
  • Water bottle
  • Book Bag
  • A rucksack with spare clothes (nursery children)
  • A hat and sun cream (in Spring and Summer)
We ask that all children are provided with the following to keep in school:
  • PE Kit (PE is on a Monday)
  • Wellington Boots - we like to spend lots of time outdoors and use the field even in wet weather.
Please get in touch with any of the class 1 team if you have any questions, or are unable to access Tapestry.

Inspiring a love for reading

In Class 1 we read stories as a class twice a day, and during child-led play the children have access to our well-resourced and comfortable book corner. The book corner is themed to the topic each term, as well as having well-loved favourite stories all year round.

All children are provided with a book bag and have the opportunity to visit the school library each week to choose a story to take home to share with an adult at home.

Children in reception will bring home a book each week linked to their reading level.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
The children have now gained a solid understanding of our school rules, and have begun to understand why following rules is important. This term the children have continued to develop friendships, and establish a strong sense of self. With adult modelling, quality interactions and our weekly SCARF sessions, children have deepened their understanding of their own feelings and the feelings of others. We have enjoyed learning about our world and how we can care for it, and for other people, animals and plants. The children have grown in confidence and have shown increasing independence with managing disagreements and conflicts in their play. We have continued with our We Thinkers sessions, focusing this term on ‘The Group Plan’, which has made our group activities more effective and collaborative.
Communication and Language
Communication and Language is a huge focus area for our Reception classes. Our WellComm and We Thinkers programmes support social interaction and communication, speech, and language. This half term we are going to introduce a weekly ‘Show and Tell’ session. This term’s show and tell focus is our favourite books from home. The children have been so excited to share with the class their favourite character, or part of the story. The children love sharing their home learning experiences that have been uploaded to Tapestry- we love finding out about your home achievements and sharing them with the rest of the class.
Physical Development
The children’s PE sessions cover a range of activities which support their physical development, including gross and fine motor skills. The children have enjoyed taking part in PE sessions where they are learning to jump safely, walk, and run using varying directions and speeds. Our fine motor skills are developed each week in our finger fit sessions. This term we have been working on cutting, folding, painting, drawing and weaving.
Literacy
The children’s Literacy has continued to develop this term. We are so proud of the children’s enthusiasm for their daily phonics sessions, where they have learnt many phonemes and graphemes, and have the opportunity to apply these in their writing and writing. We have also started our drawing club sessions which the children have really enjoyed. Each week we really focused on a text, drawing, writing and answering I wonder questions about it.  The children continue to practise their name writing daily and are supported with correct letter formation. We LOVE books and stories in Reception, and we are starting a book vote each day where children will get to vote for which story they would like to hear at the end of the day!
Mathematics
Our Mathematics curriculum supports children to develop secure understanding of early number. This term, using the Master the Curriculum programme, we have continued subitising (recognising small amounts without counting) and singing lots of number nursery rhymes. Mathematical opportunities are in every area of the learning environment, with loose parts for children to sort and count, shapes to discuss and describe, and fun puzzles to complete! Continuing to strengthen our subitising skills has supported us to recognise that numbers are made up of other numbers. With our new knowledge we have been working on composition of number, looking at dominoes, Numicon and other representations of number. Each day we practise our number formation and counting.

Expressive Arts and Design
The children have enjoyed creating observational drawings and paintings this term. We have been looking closely at flowers, and carefully drawing what we can see. We have enjoyed exploring rhythm and making patterns out of music and sound. We love imaginative play and this term we have enjoyed dressing up  and role playing being police, fire fighters, doctors, farmers and vets.

Understanding the World
This term, we have been on welly walks, noticing seasonal changes around us and in our local environment. We have been able to spot many signs of spring! We enjoyed a visit to Heligan where we learnt what it was like to be a farmer and how to take care of the different animals. We celebrated St Piran’s Day by making our very cream teas, and created our own Cornish flags.
