We start the year by supporting the children to gain a solid understanding of our school rules, and understand why following rules is important. Throughout the year, the children will develop friendships, and establish a strong sense of self. With adult modelling, quality interactions and our weekly SCARF sessions, children will deepen their understanding of their own feelings and the feelings of others. We will learn about our world and how we can care for it, and for other people, animals and plants. We support the children to grow in confidence and increasing independence with managing disagreements and conflicts in their play. Alongside SCARF, we also use We Thinkers to support children with their social development.
Communication and Language
Communication and Language is a key area of learning in Class 1 and is embedded throughout our daily routines and activities. We use the WellComm and We Thinkers programmes to support children's speech, language, communication and social interaction skills. Children take part in daily WellComm small group sessions, which are carefully planned to develop their speaking, listening and understanding skills. We also use WellComm conversation prompts during snack time to encourage meaningful discussions, helping children to build confidence when communicating with their peers.
Our weekly focus story plays an important role in developing vocabulary, introducing children to new words and language in a fun and engaging way. Through high-quality interactions with adults during continuous provision, children are encouraged to express their ideas, ask questions, share experiences and develop their communication skills across all areas of learning. By providing a language-rich environment, we aim to help every child become a confident and effective communicator.
Physical Development
Physical Development is a major part of our everyday learning in EYFS. We begin each day with a range of engaging activities designed to develop children's fine motor skills, including finger strengthening, hand strengthening, cutting and mark-making tasks. These activities are carefully planned to progress throughout the year, helping children develop the control, coordination and confidence needed for later writing. During the Autumn term, children take part in daily gross motor activities and 'Squiggle While You Wiggle' sessions. These fun, movement-based experiences help to develop core strength, balance, coordination and the foundational movements required for successful handwriting as the year progresses.
Children also participate in weekly PE sessions that support both gross and fine motor development. Through a variety of exciting activities, they learn to move safely and confidently, developing skills such as jumping, balancing, walking and running at different speeds and in different directions. These experiences encourage children to enjoy being active while building the physical skills needed for learning, play and everyday life. Throughout our indoor and outdoor provision, children are provided with regular opportunities to practise and refine their physical skills, supporting their growing independence, resilience and overall wellbeing.
Literacy
Literacy is at the heart of our Reception curriculum, and we strive to foster a lifelong love of reading, storytelling and writing. Through daily phonics sessions, children progressively build their knowledge of phonemes, graphemes and digraphs, developing the essential foundations for both reading and writing.
Each day, children take part in Drawing Club, where we explore a different high-quality text each week. These engaging sessions help to develop vocabulary, comprehension, imagination, drawing and early writing skills, while encouraging a love of books and storytelling. Through meaningful discussions and exciting literacy experiences, children are inspired to become confident communicators and enthusiastic readers. As the year progresses, children are supported in developing their writing skills, beginning with writing their first name, then moving on to their full name. Adults work closely with the children to model and reinforce correct letter formation, helping them to build confidence and accuracy in their writing.
We love sharing stories in Reception and provide many opportunities for children to enjoy books throughout the day. Whether listening to stories on the Toniebox, exploring our wide range of books, or relaxing in our cosy reading area, children are encouraged to develop a love of reading. Each day, children take part in a book vote, choosing which story they would like to hear at the end of the day. This gives them ownership of their reading experiences, introduces democracy and ensures that story time remains a much-loved part of our daily routine.
Mathematics is an important part of everyday learning in EYFS, helping children to develop a secure understanding of number, shape, measure and pattern. Using the Master the Curriculum programme, mathematical concepts and skills are taught in a clear and progressive way, enabling children to build confidence and fluency as they learn. Mathematical opportunities are woven throughout our learning environment, encouraging children to explore and apply their learning during play. Children use loose parts to sort, count, compare and create patterns, while a variety of shapes and mathematical resources encourage them to discuss, describe and investigate mathematical ideas independently.
As the year progresses, children develop their number formation skills through focused weekly activities, helping them to form numerals correctly and confidently. Daily routines also provide meaningful opportunities to practise mathematics. During self-registration, children count how many classmates are present, compare quantities and discuss numbers. They are also introduced to a range of mathematical representations, including ten frames, five frames and number lines, which support their understanding of number, counting and early calculation. Through a combination of adult-led teaching, practical resources and purposeful play, we help children develop a strong foundation in mathematics and foster curiosity, confidence and enjoyment in their learning.
Expressive Arts and Design
Expressive Arts and Design provides children with opportunities to explore their creativity, imagination and self-expression through a wide range of exciting experiences. Children take part in weekly music sessions where they develop their understanding of musical concepts such as beat, pitch and rhythm. They enjoy exploring different instruments, creating patterns through sound and music, and learning how music can be used to express feelings and ideas. Our carefully planned art curriculum introduces children to a variety of artists and their work, inspiring them to explore, experiment and develop a range of artistic skills and techniques. Through drawing, painting, printing, collage and sculpture, children are encouraged to express their own ideas and build confidence in their creative abilities.
Imaginative play is a valued part of our EYFS environment. Continuous provision areas, such as our home corner and mud kitchen, provide rich opportunities for children to engage in role play, develop storytelling skills and use their imagination creatively. These experiences help children make sense of the world around them while developing their communication, social and emotional skills. Throughout the year, we enhance our learning environments to reflect a range of celebrations and cultural events, including Harvest, Diwali and Lunar New Year. These enhancements encourage children to explore different traditions, express their ideas creatively and develop an appreciation of the diverse world around them.
Understanding the World
Throughout their time in EYFS, children develop an ever-growing understanding of the world around them. We begin by focusing on what is familiar and meaningful to the children, exploring topics such as themselves, their families and their immediate environment. As their knowledge and experiences expand children learn more about the local community, the area in which they live and the people who help us. As the year progresses, children are encouraged to look beyond their own experiences, exploring celebrations, traditions and ways of life from around the world. They learn about similarities and differences between themselves and others, developing respect, curiosity and an appreciation of diversity.
Throughout the year, we enhance our learning environments to reflect a range of cultural celebrations and special events, including Harvest, Diwali and Lunar New Year. These experiences provide opportunities for children to explore different traditions, foods, stories and customs, helping them to develop a deeper understanding of the diverse world in which they live. Through discussions, stories, hands-on experiences, visitors, outdoor learning, trips and play-based exploration, we encourage children to ask questions, make connections and develop a sense of wonder about the world around them.
