English at Whitemoor

At Whitemoor Academy, we strive to provide our children with the highest quality teaching of English from the moment they begin their learning journey with us. We aim for each child to become a lover of English and to understand how each skill taught, whether that be in Reading, Phonics, Writing or Grammar, will support development and success across the curriculum.

The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

We have a well-organised English curriculum that provides many purposeful opportunities for reading, writing and discussion. Teachers adapt various resources as appropriate to their classes, but also ensure that cross curricular links with current topic work are woven into the programme of study to provide a platform for talk and deliver enriched opportunities for writing.  Writing is celebrated and displayed in all classrooms and around the school.

At Whitemoor, our aims for writing are to ensure that all pupils:

  • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  • write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
  • have the opportunity to become a master and lover of English.

We want Whitemoor children to be enthusiastic, independent and lively writers with an innate desire to read for pleasure.

As with all of our practices at Whitemoor Academy, we are always reflecting and striving to improve. During 2022/23, we targeted Early Reading at Whitemoor. This is continuing into the year 2023/24 in addition to embedding our new writing approach. We have also begun to implement the "Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar" unit from Grammarsaurus to improve our pupil's understanding of sentence structure and knowledge of grammar, particularly subject-verb agreement. This will be rolled out as a whole-school approach from September 2024.
