Welcome to the autumn term 2020!

English at Whitemoor

At Whitemoor we are passionate about reading and children's access to books. We have a cosy library in addition to book areas in each classroom which always contain an up date choice of reading material. This is supported by our school librarians who work alongside Mrs Vickery to organise and replenish the stock.

Early reading and writing at Whitemoor is taught through Read Write Inc (Please see separate section on website) whereas from Year 2 up, we strive to teach English both as a discrete subject and cross curricular. Guided Reading and focused sentence level work may therefore be taught outside the normal English lesson.

English is always at the heart of curriculum planning so that subject matter from other curriculum areas is available as content or stimulus for speaking, listening, reading and writing. All curriculum areas will involve some aspects of English.

There are weekly shared story sessions for KS1 and KS2. All teachers read, entertain and thrill their classes with whole class reading on a daily basis. We also celebrate world book day every year with a variety of activities as well as events such as book swaps to encourage children to enjoy reading at home as well as in school. Speaking and listening is incorporated into all lessons and teachers model high level vocabulary throughout all curriculum subjects.

As with all of our practices at Whitemoor Academy, we are always reflecting and striving to improve. During 2019-20, we are targeting the progress of middle attaining readers. Through careful action planning we aim to raise the reading achievement for a significant group of targeted children, whilst ensuring the continuous progress of all our readers.
